In order to help women to find their calling in STEM and unlock their potential in corporate sector, there is a need in consolidation of educational institutions and companies for promotion of women in technological sphere.

Under support:

OUR VISION

Number of women in Ukrainian technological companies amounts to 23% and in general there are very few of them at the top-managers’ level. Even more, forecasts concerning attraction of female students from universities to STEM companies are very unfavourable: there are not so many girls among the students, and even fewer of them stay in the profession. Taking into account women’s abilities, ideas and leadership potential, one can state that human and economic resources of women haven’t been realized to full extent.

In order to help women to find their calling in STEM and unlock their potential in corporate sector, there is a need in consolidation of educational institutions and companies for promotion of women in technological sphere.

STATISTICS

  • IMPORTANCE OF STEM

Up to 70% of jobs will require STEM skills in the future. Moreover, countries will lack personnel in STEM industries.
The employment rate of women in the STEM is still low. In the USA they make up only 25% of all workers, in the UK the rate is around 13%. In Ukraine, women make up 25% of all STEM workers and 15% of management un the field.

  • ROLE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION

By the moment of getting a secondary education, girls show a high potential in STEM-oriented subjects, particularly in mathematics, physics, and biology. Nevertheless, girls are three times less likely to get a degree in engineering than guys, and are almost twice less likely to become “farmers, specialists in the field of agriculture”. The profession of “IT specialist” is equally popular among boys and girls.

Among the reasons for the low interest of girls in STEM education, the most popular are the lack of success stories of women in STEM, insufficient incentives to study these disciplines from the teachers` side, the lack of opportunities for practical experience, the existence of certain stereotypes regarding the roles of women in the family, and so on.

  • ROLE OF UNIVERSITIES

The level of popularity among STEM-girls is extremely low: on average, girls make up 29.5% of all STEM-students. Mostly, girls study “Biology” (80.7%), “Chemistry” (70.2%), “Biotechnology and Bioengineering” (66.3%). The least are Applied Mechanics (10.2%), Aerospace and Space-rocket Technology (9.1%) and Agroengineering (2.4%).

In recent years, the number of women among post-graduate chemists has decreased, as well as among Ph.D. students in the fields of biological, medical and chemical sciences.

  • ROLE of COMPANIES

Young women who have received a STEM degree have a longer transition from study to work than men.

Employers are not sufficiently interested in hiring women, due to the possible period of maternity, the lower physical endurance of women and the need to provide additional social protection measures. For example, in the IT sector, with the growth of women’s positions, the share of those who indicate that work can provide enough time for the family decreases (from 36% to 25%).

The ability to combine family responsibilities and professional development is a barrier to the promotion of women, as well as the main reason for the possible release of them. At the same time, the main reason for the dismissed men is the lack/absence of interesting projects.
